Sports Day - 19th January 2018

Contrary to the popular perception, wellbeing of a person is multifaceted. It includes health, wealth, social status, occupation, educational qualification etc. But the most important of all is health without which everything else is rendered irrelevant. A healthy mind dwells only in a healthy body.

And thus did we begin our Sports Day on the sunny January morning on the 19th with the intention of creating an athletic and vigorous generation. Students, who were lined up in four huge columns donning their house uniforms and led by respective captains, marched majestically around the enormous Girijyothi ground planting their boots solemnly on the newly cut grass. Meanwhile runners bearing torch light made their rousing sprint and handed it over to Rev. Fr. Babu Mattathil CMI, Manager, Girijyothi College, who ceremoniously lit the Games Lamp in the presence of Rev. Fr. Toji Puthenkaduppil CMI, Principal, Girijyothi College, to officially inaugurate the event. It was a befitting start to a day that would later witness some exhilarating moments of sheer thrill and excitement.

There were more than a dozen of events in track and field categories and all students with the exception of none actively took part in them. The competitive items were well organised and run by Sports Committee comprising of members of faculty with sincere and praiseworthy contributions from Mr. Rahul Raju, Ms. Jovalna Jolly, General Captains for boys and girls, housecaptains and other students.

The first event to take place was musical chair in which all the members of staff participated including Fr. Babu Mattathil CMI and Fr. Toji Puthenkaduppil. This was followed by another staff item – ball passing. Then the first competitive event of 400 metres race for boys and girls started. This was shortly joined by high jump and long jumps simultaneously held with throw-events at the centre of the pitch. Shot put and discus throw were also hugely popular as it had maximum contestants of around forty.

The piece of the cake was 4x100 metre relay – boys and girls, that was so fiercely run that had you not witnessed them in action, it would have been almost impossible for you to comprehend that these pretty faced children had such a tremendous attitude in them.

The end of such a breath-taking and inspiring day also saw more than a handful of girls
compete in sprint and long distance races falling flat on their face, but only to get up and cross the finishing line with even more determination and resoluteness. Kudos to them for their unfailing spirit and never-give-up attitude.
