For the academic
year 2018-2019 fifty students enrolled in the NSS unit of Girijyothi College
out of which forty eight volunteers attended the seven day annual camp held at
Mulakuvalli Vazhathope Grama Panchayat Idukki from 21st December to
27th December 2018. St.
Joseph LP School, Mulakuvalli was selected as the camping place. The vicar of
church, Rev. Fr. Joseph Velinjalil, gave permission for the conduct of the camp.
As per the direction from the University on 21st
December 2018 Friday evening, all the NSS volunteers along with the programme
officer Mr. Ouseph Augustine, Mr. Akshay Mohandas Camp Assistant, lady
representative Miss Chandini Prasad, student volunteer secretaries Mr. Roney
Joseph and Ms. Jesna Rajeev moved to the camp.
NSS lady
volunteer Jesna Rajeev anchored the programme. NSS programme officer Mr. Ouseph
Augustine officially welcomed all the distinguished guests. Girijyothi College
Manager, Rev. Fr. Babu Mattathil CMI gave the presidential address. Vazhathope
Grama Panchayat president, Ms. Rincy Siby made the inaugural speech and hoisted
the NSS Flag. Volunteers clapped the NSS clap and sang the NSS song. Rev. Fr.
Joseph Velinjalil, Vicar of Mulakuvalli, Rev. Fr Toji Puthenkaduppil CMI,
principal of Girijyothi College, Mr. Babu Palakkeel, Vazhathope Grama Panchayat
Vice president, Ms. Alice Jose, Chairperson for health and education Vazhathope
Grama Panchayat felicitated the gathering.
The main work of
the NSS volunteers was to remove the mud
and soil deposited from two houses due to land slide and heavy rain occurred in
the month of August 2018. Names of house owners are Mr. Joseph Pichappillil, Mr. Sivan Kunnel, Mr.
Pappukunju Athikkal and Mr. Mayilakkuzhiyil Salu. volunteers also
collected the details regarding
alcohol consumption among the people in the 2nd & 3rd
wards of Vazhathope Grama Panchayat. The volunteers were divided into 10
groups. This survey helped the students in understanding the problems faced by
the people because of alcohol consumption.
Civil
Excise Officer Mr. Jayan P John took an effective and authentic class about
drug abuse with the help of projector and slides. The effective class made the
volunteers aware of the ill effects of drug abuse. Fr. Joseph Velinjalil, vicar
of Mulakuvally, who is also the Judge of the family court, Idukki Catholic
Diocese, took a class on “Intensive Orientation for Family Life in this Modern
Society.” The volunteers were much attentive in this class which dealt with the
problems faced by the young children in the modern society. An effective class
was taken by Vazhathope Junior Health Inspector Ms Jiby about health awareness.
She explained the need to take healthy food and suggested precaution to keep
away certain diseases. Besides the coordinators, members of faculty from
Girijyothi College also oversaw the proceedings in the camp. On the Christmas
day, all the volunteers along with the programme officers and staff members
went for trekking to Palkulamedu. Palkulamedu being a beautiful mountain, many
tourists come from different parts of the state and country. The experience of
climbing the hill through the grassy rout was an unforgettable experience for
all the volunteers. On this day Vazhathope Grama Panchayat President Ms. Rincy
Siby visited the camp and evaluated the activities of the NSS volunteers. She
also gifted Christmas Cakes for the volunteers. Fr. Toji Puthenkaduppil,
Principal, visited the camp on 26th December and evaluated the
activities. A detailed evaluation of the camp was conducted in the afternoon. All
the volunteers gathered around the fire in the evening by performing different
programmes. They danced to the tune of the music. The most amazing and exhilarating
event was the campfire which was held on the last day.
And
the last day, NSS Programme officer Mr. Ouseph Augustine welcomed Fr Toji
Puthenkaduppil CMI the Principal of Girijyothi College as the Chief Guest. The
best male camper Mr. Alen Jose, Female camper Ms. Sherin Kunjumon, the best
co-ordinator Mr. Justine T.C, the best male entertainer male Mr. Sujeesh S.
Sunil, the best female entertainer Ms.
Jesna Rajeev were given prizes. After the official programme the camp was
declared closed. Students returned to their houses by noon.
